Pre-tour 2: A Day in Elsinore

Castles, sea air, street food and a couple of good bars, all just a train ride from Copenhagen. Thursday 13 May, roughly 10:00 to 18:15.
The plan for the day

I will pick you up at your hotel, and we will head to Copenhagen Central Station together.

Around 10:15
Take the train north along the coast to Helsingør.

Arrive in Helsingør and walk along the harbour towards Kronborg.

Explore Kronborg Castle. Step into the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet, wander through its grand halls and take in the views across the Øresund to Sweden.

Lunch at Værftets Madmarked. This former shipyard is now a lively food hall, so everyone can choose what they fancy and meet back at the table.

Stroll past the M/S Maritime Museum and through Helsingør's old streets, with time for a few stories and photo stops along the way.

First drinks at SKUM, the town's beer bar, with plenty of choices beyond beer too.

One last stop at Borgerkroen for a drink and a taste of a traditional Danish pub, close to the station.

Take the train back to Copenhagen.

Your guide: Oliver Wang Hansen I grew up in the area, so I will show you the famous sights and a little of the Helsingør I know personally.
Kronborg is Elsinore. Shakespeare set Hamlet at this castle, using the English name for Helsingør, and the courtyard you will walk into is the one the play made famous. He almost certainly never came to Denmark himself, but English actors performed at Kronborg in the 1580s and brought the place home with them.
Hamlet has been staged at the castle on and off since 1816, and the list of people who have played the prince there runs from Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud to Christopher Plummer and Jude Law. Kronborg has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2000. You do not need to know the play to enjoy the day, but you will be standing where "To be, or not to be" belongs.
Budget roughly €75 to €100 per person, which is about DKK 550 to 750, for return train tickets, admission to Kronborg, lunch and a drink at each bar. You pay in kroner on the day. This is an estimate, not a fixed package price. Everyone chooses their own food and drinks, and there is no separate guide fee.
Bring comfortable shoes and a jacket for the sea breeze. We will confirm train times, ticket prices and the meeting time at your hotel closer to the day.
